The Rotor of the Djinn was propelled by compressed air led through nozzles at their end. The air was compressed by a compressor driven by a gas turbine. This type of propulsion was not successfull due to its low efficiency.

Developed by Stanley Hiller, the UH23 became one of the early standard helicopters, as the Bell 47. A special design feature is the Rotormatic which controlled the main rotor by the control surfaces of the auxiliary rotor. More than 2200 were build.

 
 

Hughes 269 A, USA, 1956 , Light Helicopter 

 

Designed as a light helicopter this type was both military and civil a success. The famous research vessel Calypso of mr. Cousteau had a helicopter of this typ on its voyages aboard. In total some 1960 were build.

The automobile manufaturer Borgward in Bremen tried to expand its program by helicopters. So the Kolibri was designed together with Prof. Heinrich Focke. The project was shut down because of economical problems of the Borgward factories.

The Alouette III is developed from the Alouette II, fittet with a larger cabin, a more powerful engine and hydraulic controls. This helicopter is used by rescue services, even in the high mountains, because it's powerful engine and reliability.

 
 

Bölkow BO 102 Helitrainer, Germany, 1959 , Basic helicopter Trainer 

 

The HeliTrainer was not a real helicopter but a trainer that was mounted on a rack. Most of the basic heli- copter flight maneuvers could be learned on it. It was much more cost-effective and undangerous as a real helicopter.

 
 

Merckle SM 67, Germany, 1959 , Light multi-purpose helicopter 

 

The SM67 was the first turbine-driven german helicop- ter. It was similar to the french Alouette II and the flight test stated sufficient result. But it was not build in large numbers, because the Alouette II was earlier available to the german army.

Bölkow BO FJ Flying Jeep, Germany, 1960 , Experimental Helicopter 

 

Experimental device for the development of a flying platform. Designed by Dr. Heidelberg. Lift and pro pulsion were supplied by several propellers. The props were driven by compressed air supplied by a compressor on the ground.

The Bo46 was designed around the Derschmidt rotor sys- tem to perform highspeed trials. The rotorblades are moved individually to suppress negative backflow effects during highspeed flight. Technical problems couldn't be solved so the project was shut down.

A business helicopter build only in small numbers. 1966 Brantly was taken over by LearJet and the production of this helicopter stopped.

The CH53 was developed for use in the US Marine Corps. A singlke CH53 can transport a half company. The CH53 is in use in various countries. Its duties are transport, minesweeping and search- and rescue jobs.

The VFW H3 is a experimental helicopter to test some new propulsion concepts. As a mixture an autogiro and a helicopter, the main rotor is driven only for start and hovering. Inflight it is driven by the air- stream like an autogiro. Horizontal propulsion is done by two small impeller drives.
